Review Of Just Listen by D.Breeze
I received an ARC of this book for review. This story is so beautiful that it brought me to tears and I am not even exaggerating. I finsihed it in a single setting because I couldn't put it down at all. This story deals with depression and it was a very hard hitting topic for me and that's exactly why I picked it in the first place. I am still reeling in the after thoughts I had once I finished reading it. There are so many people we know and who are dear to us who suffer from depression and we try to 'understand' them and start seeing them in a different light and that's exactly where we go wrong and that's what this book beautifully highlights. We actually go into the head of the person with depression- Jack in this case and see things form his perspective. The main focus of this story is depression, its effects and how it feels to be in love with a guy facing depression. It's gut wrenching. And writing such a story is very hard since it needs to be handled very delicately and at the same time must be made very effective and realistic. Full points to D. Breeze for that. She has done absolute justice in sketching Jack's state of mind and she even justifies his actions without making us pity him. It's a fine line to understand a person and start feeling sorry for him, but the way she has written it makes us feel the former and gives us a very good insight into how this illness can tear apart many lives if ignored or neglected. The story though heavy with emotions was not too complicated and was quite simple. It is a love story of Jack, who is facing depression since many years now falling in love with Devin who is a nurse and who makes every attempt to cure him. Their love story was heartfelt and very painful especially after Devin learns the truth about his depression. My heart broke for her on many occasions. After a bad relationship it was hard for her to trust Jack but once she did, she fell head over heels in love with him and it became THAT hard for her to just leave him despite his repeated efforts to push her away. She stood by him always and kept fighting for their love and for him even when he kept telling himself that he was not worthy of her. I am not saying Devin is perfect, she came with her own flaws and was a little too pushy at times thanks to her insecurities but her love for him was undisputable and it shines throughtout the book. The story mainly revolved around these two though there were important secondary characters like Jack's therapist Fin and Devin's friends. The writing was excellent and it flowed well with the story. The words were heavy with unbridled feelings, making the story very intense and nerve-wracking. I am really glad that there is a second installment to the series because the story is far from over and I can't wait to find out how it will continue. Post this D.Breeze became a one click author for me and definitely five stars for this book.
